Recently, an American comedian named Adam Carolla insulted Manny Pacquiao, the Filipinos and the Philippines with an interview with a podcast listener. He said some stuff that I don’t know if he knows that it is possible that it will be heard by millions of Filipinos. Now, aside from this that raise the temperature of my blood like h3ll, virus and malware coders/programmers takes this opportunity to spread there bad intent through search query “Adam Carolla Pacquiao” on Google. Some of the sites can be blocked by Firefox / Chrome and marked by Google as “harmful sites” but some get away from their radar and my luck is I have a web filter enabled on my anti-virus program.

Guys so be careful with this query: Adam Carolla Pacquiao and make sure you are equipped with the latest anti-virus program that can check virus and bad scripts from the web and prevent it from infecting your PC.

No More 403/501/500 Error When Traffic Spikes

I really love my new hosting! For the 2nd time around, it handles the spike in traffic that happens to my site during the fight of Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey. I am currently using BLUEHOST. There’s no problem when the traffic kicks and come to think of it, I am hosting two sites that generate high traffic on the same date. I usually have a problem like this on my previous shared hosting (HOSTGATOR) and makes all my site under the hosting inaccessible.

Bluehost throttle features really do the magic plus I shift to another page caching plug-in in Worpdress. I previously use Super Cache plug-ins but since I encountered problem using it on my other site (I don’t know why) I shifted to Hyper Cache plug-in. I found it much faster compared to Super Cache with much simplified interface.

Thank you Bluehost and now I am not afraid of the traffic anymore.

Recently a lot of websites are reported being attacked by several hackers from different part of the world. Even the government websites are said to be hacked (which I honestly doubt it and personally in my opinion, I believe that its an inside job, someone gave the access ). Now the possibilities that your websites or even your PCs can be hacked is great. Specially with the wide spread of malware and malicious codes like virus & worms that weakens the security barrier of the PCs and websites.

You might wonder why a SEO guy like me is concerned with this issue. Well, website’s ranking (and even traffic) can be affected negatively by this kind of problem. When the site is infected or suffers the hacking attack, it left a bad reputation on the site that makes your visitors avoid or abandon your site. Aside from that search engines today put a visible marking on their search results regarding the infection and the harm that it might cause to possible visitors.

Now, how to prevent it? Here’s some of the things that I think you need to take into considerations when you are building a shield for your personal computers and websites.

Enable your firewall on your operating systems to avoid unnecessary connection or access from intruders.
Patch your operating systems with latest updates.
Update the content management system of your website with the latest version.
Use strong password for the access details for both the Administrator or user password of your PC and for the website access. Usually a 12 or more character combination of alphabetic, numeric and symbols can build a strong password.
Never give your personal information to just anyone else who email you. Hackers usually use this to bypass or request for access details.
Do not open any attachment specially if you don’t know the sender. Use email clients that automatically prevent auto-viewing of attached files.
Avoid saving your password when asked by the browsers.

What if your website or PC is already hacked, what will you do? Here some of the basic things that you can do

Change the access details of your website or PC immediately.
Check your PC for possible infection of virus or malware. Remove it when found.
Restore recent back-up copy of your website. If it is not available, then let the technical guys remove all the infections, defaced pages or compromised files. This is very time consuming and its the reason why you should back-up your files always.
Patch your site or PC’s OS immediately if there’s an available update.

Chromium OS Project Announced

Google Chrome OS

About a half year ago, Google announced its new operating system project called Chrome OS. Today, prior to the release of this new operating system to netbook users, they’ve released an open source OS code named Chromium OS. It is a project that “aims to provide fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web.” According to Matt Cutts blog’s recent post, the boot time of the newest OS reach at about 7 seconds only. Woah, that was fast right!?

Now, if you want to have a copy of the operating system at its early stage, you can go to http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os for the source code and instruction on how to implement it. Remember, the said Chromium OS are intended for netbook computers and requires you to have a Linux OS (like Ubuntu) to build it.

By the way, here is the video from Google Chrome’s official Youtube Channel. It contains stuff that discuss about what inspires the development of Chrome OS.

If I could find free time this holiday vacation, I will try to explore this OS. I just loved to see and experience it on my MSI Wind netbook!

Warning Against New Breed of Email Spammers

Recently, I’ve been receiving several email spams and it is different from the usual spam that I usually received. I usually get an email containing a description of winning a certain contest or raffle where I didn’t register nor participate. Right now, its quite different from the other spams. Usually mail programs and web mail system can easily detect a junk mail or spam mail based on the body or text of the email or on the subject area of the mail. This let them easily be filtered out of the Inbox folder of the mail program. Now, what the spammers did to bypass such security measure was put all of their soliciting content inside a document file then send it as an attachment instead of being as the body of the mail. This made the mail system to have a very hard time detecting the spam mail.

To avoid this kind of spam and be victimized by identity theft, credit card scams, and other security problems related to your accounts and computer, try to consider the following tips:

Open only attachments from the people that is on your phonebook already.
Do not give any confidential information to anybody via email specially if they are asking of it because you win of something that you have never registered nor participated.
Do not post your email addresses online. Spammers usually fetch your emails from the sites where you posted your email. If it is really necessary to show your email address, use an image to show it. SpamBots usually can’t read the address on image.
Enable the Email protection feature of your anti-virus program.
Do not open your online banks nor online accounts via links shown on an email. Open it on the browser by typing the URL (web address) of the site directly on the address bar.

Update Your Browser

Are you still using the old versions of browser like the Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) or lower? Try updating your site now to the latest version of IE6 for better security and surfing experience. I am making this post because I found out yesterday when I check on my site in Iloilo in an internet cafe, that my site’s widget does not show properly in IE6 but looks better using the latest version of Firefox, Safari, Opera and Google Chrome. Now, what are the advantages if you will use the latest version of browsers. Below are some of the the good things that might convince you to upgrade or update your browser.

I Am Into Chrome Lately

Lately, I’ve been using Google Chrome a lot compared to the usual browser that I use which is the Mozilla Firefox. Its because I always suffer slow down and sudden freezing of my PC whenever I open Firefox. My time is so valuable that I just can’t wait for the Firefox to load. I don’t know why it always freezed. I think I have enough memory and disk to handle all the processing for the said program. The speed of loading of Chrome made me to use it frequently.

However, I am still using Firefox specially when I am in my “campaign.” I like the plug-ins that I have installed for my site that I always use for the SEO stuff which I think FF can only provide. Aside from that I like FF more than Chrome whenever I want to make a post specially if it involves embedding an image. Chrome just is not supporting resizing by dragging in WordPress.

Now, I check on my stats regarding my visitors preferences in viewing my sites and I thought a lot of them is using Chrome but I have discovered that most of my visitors use Internet Explorer then Mozilla Firefox while Chrome only falls on the 4th which is higher than Opera.

Google Still Tops Nielsen Charts

Nielsen company is an independent organization that delivers comprehensive, independent measurement and analysis of online audiences, advertising, video, consumer-generated media, word of mouth, commerce and consumer behavior. They have just released the top 10 US web brands (home and work audiences) for the month of June 2009 and from their data, Google still tops their charts. See the table below containing the May and June comparison of unique visitors in millions of the top 10 web brands based on the May and June 2009 data by Nielsen:

As shown on the table, Google still got the numbers when it comes to unique visitors but see how Facebook got a vast amount of increase in its traffic. By the way the table is based on the follow Nielsen PRs:

Social Weehz: A New Dofollow Social Bookmarking Site

Social Bookmarking sites are web sites that allow users (SEO or non-SEO practitioners) to save, organize, search and manage bookmarks of web pages on the internet. This bookmarks can be shared or recommended, from different articles to even images and videos.
