What’s so special with iPhone 3G…?

iPhone 3G in the PhilippinesWhat’s so special with iPhone 3G that I’m so desperate to have it on my palm? Maybe, I’m not the only one who feels the same way. Actually other people out there buy it even it’s not legally available or even order it from other countries which iPhone 3G is available just to have it. If I have money right now, I might do the same thing!

I know that iPhone 3G in the Philippines is not yet available but Apple already announced that it will be coming soon in the Philippines through Globe Telecom and I think Smart should talk to Apple so they can have rights to distribute and offer it to their subscribers. Wee, I’m really excited about this!

Now, here are some of the reasons that capture my mind and made me to focus on this goal on having it (i promise to myself that I should have it this year whenever its legally available!):

OpenSuse 11.0 Released

This month of June, new version of OpenSuse was released on the internet.

OpenSuse, which is one of my favorite Linux distribution because of its ease in configuring the system through its YAST, released its new stable version which is version 11. I only knew this yesterday and I’ve already finished installing the 10.3 on our servers and if I just knew it earlier I was able to use it, but maybe I’ll upgrade it if I still have time. OpenSuse 11.0 was officially released last June 19 and maybe because I’m busy with the Busby SEO Challenge, I was not able to see the latest release.

Here are some of the major updates on OpenSuse 11.0:

1. OpenSuse 11.0 desktop now includes Gnome 2.22, the stable release of KDE 4.0 and the 3D look via Compiz Fusion.

2. For browser, OpenSuse 11.0 utilizes the latest release of Firefox 3.0

3. Media Player: Banshee 1.0

4. For office applications, OpenOffice.org 2.4 is also included.

5. NetworkManger was updated to 0.7 and can support multiple network interfaces.

6. Other update:

  • From Linux Kernel 2.6.22.5-31 to Linux Kernel 2.6.25
  • GCC 4.2.1 to GCC 4.3
  • glibc 2.8

This Linux from Novell is really going the distance and its getting better every time it is updated. I will definitely download and install it right now! If you want to download it just visit their website at http://www.opensuse.org.

OpenSuse 10.3 and Squid Proxy

I successfully configured our new dual-core server as the proxy server of our computer laboratories. The operating that I’m using was OpenSuse 10.3 and I use Squid as the proxy server for the said purpose. Here’s the things I have done to make this happen:

1. I recompiled the kernel of OpenSuse so that it can utilize the new chipsets of the new servers since the OS can’t detect the Marvell Yukon Ethernet Card (see my previous post).

2. Then, I installed the Squid version 2.6.STABLE14. I even installed the SquidGuard for the purpose of filtering web contents. Last year we’re using SafeSquid for proxy server and web content filtering but this year I decided to use the Squid Proxy so I can try it and explore its functionalities.

3. After that, I open the file /etc/squid.conf then change the some ACL part of the configuration, such as which PCs should be allowed and which should be denied.

4. Then I prepared a list of URLs and domains that should be banned. At first I used the functionality of SquidGuard but I’m having trouble configuring the expression part. SquidGuard is keep on denying access other websites that are not included on the expression so I decided to use the web content filter of Squid using the ACL [acl_name] URL_REGEX option of Squid and specify the path and filename where I store the list of URLs and domains that I want to ban.

5. Then I apply some adjustment on the cache memory (RAM and Disk) to use by the server. I adjust it to make sure that Squid will maximized the use of the server.

That’s it now, were using the OpenSuse 10.3 Proxy Server with a functionality that is the same with our previous proxy server SafeSquid.

The Absence of Light

Electric power in Capiz is still not back to normal and “darkness fall” in our Barangay every after 6 in the evening. The following are the things I have experience and discovered during this “no electricity” nights:

1. I spend more quality time with my family during this “no electric power” evenings. I usually watch TV or surf the net whenever I’m staying at home after work but due to this incident I started spending more time with my child and my wife. We’re talking different things, from “INASWANG” to anything that comes in our mind.

2. I appreciate the beauty of fire flies at night.

3. I sleep and rest earlier than usual. I usually sleep late at night, usually 5 hours of sleep but right now I’m sleeping 8 hours to 10 hours of sleep. I feel more energized every morning right now.

4. I also found out that there’s life after “no internet”.

5. I have discovered something to myself, that I don’t know anything aside from using my computers and playing chess.

6. I started cooking foods.

7. I started to hate canned foods.

8. I begun to realize the value of REFRIGERATOR and ELECTRIC FAN.

9. I forgot to drink coffee before sleeping.

10. I also discovered that I can’t write anything (story, blog posts or tips) without the internet.

Video of Typhoon Frank that hits Capiz

Last Saturday, June 21, 2008, Capiz was hit by Super Typhoon named “Frank”. This is the first and one of the worst typhoon ever encountered by Capiz for this year. I have uploaded several videos in Youtube and here’s some of them: (This amateur video was taken by Mr. Allan Toos).
