Recently, an American comedian named Adam Carolla insulted Manny Pacquiao, the Filipinos and the Philippines with an interview with a podcast listener. He said some stuff that I don’t know if he knows that it is possible that it will be heard by millions of Filipinos. You can listen to the audio conversation of Adam Carolla’s rant on Manny Pacquiao HERE and you can leave your comments too there if you want to react.

Now, aside from this that raise the temperature of my blood like h3ll, virus and malware coders/programmers takes this opportunity to spread there bad intent through search query “Adam Carolla Pacquiao” on Google. Some of the sites can be blocked by Firefox / Chrome and marked by Google as “harmful sites” but some get away from their radar and my luck is I have a web filter enabled on my anti-virus program.

Guys so be careful with this query: Adam Carolla Pacquiao and make sure you are equipped with the latest anti-virus program that can check virus and bad scripts from the web and prevent it from infecting your PC.

Will Watch Pinoy Power 3 Aka Latin Fury 13 Tomorrow

Pinoy Power 3/Latin Fury 13: Donaire vs. Vargas

It is Sunday tomorrow and I’ll be watching what every pinoy will be watching this weekend – the Pinoy Power 3 or internationally known as Latin Fury 13, brought by Top Rank Promotions. Of course, I will watch it on ABS-CBN at 10:30 A.M., I think there will be no other channel in the country that will cover it. I don’t know if Solar Sports will be featuring the fight.

I like to watch Gerry Penalosa fighting against a big guy – Eric Morel. I saw them both on TV last night and Montiel got really a height and reach advantage. I hope that Gerry will survive this challenge. Aside from him, I am also eager to watch Ciso Morales on his debut fight for a title against the reigning bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel. I think he can make the pinoy proud.

Rogue Viruses / Badware Keeps on Attacking Sites

I discovered several sites again today which I will not mention on this post that is infected by the same virus that infected it last year but with slight modification on the malicious code. Some websites I know were also hacked and defaced. The problem is that sometimes, you can’t discover it until you find it out that Google already tagging/marking your site with a disturbing message “This site may harm your computer.” Which will immediately cause a drop on your traffic. The pain is it will take sometime before the “said mark” before Google lifts it.

This infection will really hurt your site in terms of traffic and sales lost which makes your SEO effort become useless. It is because, browsers today like Chrome and Firefox block sites with the said mark preventing users to open it even after you clean it.

This is the reason why you should avoid the infection to happen. It is as always I said, “prevention is always better than cure.” Here’s some of the things that you should consider to avoid this kind of situation (based on the suggestion of StopBadWare.org and my previous tips):

Protect your site

Ensure that any software you use (e.g., blogging software like WordPress, third party scripts, etc.) is kept up to date with the latest security fixes, either by you (if you installed the software) or by your hosting provider.
Remove any scripts, services, or other software that you are no longer using.
Change any default passwords that come with the software you are using.
Use appropriate file permissions on your web server.
Limit the access to the site. Remove old users that is not part of the team that should access the site.

Protect your password

Use a strong password and change it occasionally, especially if you have reason to think it has been compromised. A minimum of 12 character passwords composed of at least 2 symbols, 2 number and 2 upper case letters can create a hard to crack password.

Protect your computer

Use appropriate firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware or anti-badware. Usually infection starts on your PC. Even if you follow the previous preventive measures but you neglect your own PC, still your website can be infected.

Chromium OS Project Announced

Google Chrome OS

About a half year ago, Google announced its new operating system project called Chrome OS. Today, prior to the release of this new operating system to netbook users, they’ve released an open source OS code named Chromium OS. It is a project that “aims to provide fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web.” According to Matt Cutts blog’s recent post, the boot time of the newest OS reach at about 7 seconds only. Woah, that was fast right!?

Now, if you want to have a copy of the operating system at its early stage, you can go to http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os for the source code and instruction on how to implement it. Remember, the said Chromium OS are intended for netbook computers and requires you to have a Linux OS (like Ubuntu) to build it.

By the way, here is the video from Google Chrome’s official Youtube Channel. It contains stuff that discuss about what inspires the development of Chrome OS.

If I could find free time this holiday vacation, I will try to explore this OS. I just loved to see and experience it on my MSI Wind netbook!

Update Your Browser

Are you still using the old versions of browser like the Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) or lower? Try updating your site now to the latest version of IE6 for better security and surfing experience. I am making this post because I found out yesterday when I check on my site in Iloilo in an internet cafe, that my site’s widget does not show properly in IE6 but looks better using the latest version of Firefox, Safari, Opera and Google Chrome. Now, what are the advantages if you will use the latest version of browsers. Below are some of the the good things that might convince you to upgrade or update your browser.

Improved security. Latest versions usually patched or fixed vulnerabilities of the browser.
Enhanced plug-ins and scripting supports. More plug-ins or enhancements of websites are more supported by newer browsers compared to the old ones.
Optimized website loading and graphics rendering.
Lightweight in terms of memory and disk usage. This makes the browser to load faster.
Much improved caching capabilities.

I Am Into Chrome Lately

Lately, I’ve been using Google Chrome a lot compared to the usual browser that I use which is the Mozilla Firefox. Its because I always suffer slow down and sudden freezing of my PC whenever I open Firefox. My time is so valuable that I just can’t wait for the Firefox to load. I don’t know why it always freezed. I think I have enough memory and disk to handle all the processing for the said program. The speed of loading of Chrome made me to use it frequently.

However, I am still using Firefox specially when I am in my “campaign.” I like the plug-ins that I have installed for my site that I always use for the SEO stuff which I think FF can only provide. Aside from that I like FF more than Chrome whenever I want to make a post specially if it involves embedding an image. Chrome just is not supporting resizing by dragging in WordPress.

Now, I check on my stats regarding my visitors preferences in viewing my sites and I thought a lot of them is using Chrome but I have discovered that most of my visitors use Internet Explorer then Mozilla Firefox while Chrome only falls on the 4th which is higher than Opera.

Google Chrome OS Introduced!

An upcoming lightweight and an open-source operating system from Google was announced today. They call it as “Google Chrome OS,” which is the natural extension of their previously released browser: Google Chrome. This new operating system from the number one search engine company today will be possessing the same quality that the company was known of. Speed, simplicity and security. If it will be released, which is expected by the 2nd half of 2010, netbook will benefit from this because these devices will be the first computer to use the said OS.

So by 2010, we will be using a new Linux kernel based OS that we can utilize on our netbooks for free. That’s amazing right?! Google is really doing something to make the life of surfers much more easier with their innovations and ideas. If this will be released, I will be one of those who will acquire the said system and install it to my netbook.

Upgraded to WordPress 2.8 Baker

Wordpress 2.8

I just recently received a notification from WordPress‘ dashboard regarding the availability of the newest update of the blogging platform, which is version 2.8. I immediately updated the site and in just one click through its automatic upgrade features and I am all done. What I did first was to check if the browser still crashes whenever I upload a file using WP’s flash uploader via Firefox. It did not crashed anymore! I’ve been using Chrome lately in upgrading my blogs because of this Firefox crash issues whenever I am making image uploads via flash uploader, now its gone so I’m back to Firefox again. I’ve checked my other blogs but there’s no notification yet so I am still waiting for the said upgrade notice from WP.

According to WordPress.org, the new released version have several scripting tweaks that speed-up the system. Syntax highlighting is now on the Code editor and they have made 790 fixes on the said update. If you want to see the difference, upgrade your WordPress now.

Removal and Prevention of Gumblar.cn Infections

Gumblar.cn is a website is listed to be suspicious and contains several exploit scripts and trojans that might harm and infect computers. Google marked it as not safe for browsing. I first encountered on a website that I am working on and seen how and where it infects the website. What the trojan did on the site is it embeds its encrypted scripts on .HTML, .JS and .PHP files. You can find the Javascript of the trojan on .HTML files prior to the tag while it embeds itself on .JS files at the bottom most of the said script file. On .PHP files, it usually infects INDEX.PHP files and embeds itself either at the top or bottom of the file. I also found some infections on common .PHP files that are usually INCLUDEd as a constant file of the site. The current anti-virus that detects the said virus was AVAST Home Edition with Web Shield and Networking Shield ON.

Here’s what you will see if you will try to surf a site on Google Chrome that is infected by the trojan coming from the said site:

Now, how to remove it from your website? Well I found no reference on the net to remove it instantly so what I did is I removed the trojan scripts on each file (.JS, .HTML, INDEX.PHP) that I suspected for infection using Filezilla (FTP client program). For the WordPress infection, what I only did was I re-updated / upgraded the site to the latest version which causes the process to override existing files then remove the script from the WP-CONFIG.PHP file. This is the only file that is not overwritten by the said process that’s why I need to remove the trojan scripts manually.

As always, prevention is better than cure to avoid the pain of fixing the problems it cause to the site and to the owner. Here are some of my suggestions and recommendations I found from different web hosting sites regarding avoidance of hacking and malware infections on your site:

Change the file attributes of the files that doesn’t require writing permissions. I usually set my files to 755 attributes (MOD 755)
Update your antivirus virus database and enable or use network + web shield features at all times. Usually infection of websites starts from the local PC that uses to upload new files.
Read this PHP Security fixes recommended by a web hosting company. It contains comprehensive tips on how to avoid PHP exploits and hacks. Read it carefully and apply it if it is possible.

Latest News About Windows 7

What’s up with Windows 7 today? It is not yet officially released but a lot of its build can be found on torrent sites already. I myself have downloaded it, not from torrent but from Microsoft’s official build and installed it with my new MSI Notebook. I am using the Windows 7 Build 7000 and I think the latest build for this OS is Build 7048. Currently Microsoft stop the release of beta and you could get them from torrent sites only which honestly don’t know if it is legal or not but more likely its not. Now as far as I could try it on my notebook PC, I found the new OS faster than its previous version and it really fits well on my notebook PC. So far if it will be released, I am convinced to acquire it soon.

Now, I’ve read from Reuters today that one additional feature that they’ve put on their latest build is the abilitiy of users to disable embedded software like the Internet Explorer 8 and the other stuff that is usually bundled on Microsoft’s OS. This let users, if they will know it how, disable the use of the browser and download from the internet different browsers from the net such as Firefox, Google Chrome and others. This is maybe their move to get themselves away from the “antitrust” issues that they’ve been facing for a couple years already because of embedding essential softwares on their operating systems.
