The other day, PR for my sites just turn to N/A. I am using the Google Chrome extension to view the PR of the site that I am visiting. I thought I lost PageRank for all of my site but when I check on Facebook, Google and other sites, the same N/A PR is displayed. So I did some Google searching and found out that Google made some changes on their Google toolbar and so what I did is I install the Google toolbar on internet explorer. Then I can view the PR after that.

Next is I updated the SEOQuake Firefox add-on and made some revisions as recommended by http://www.elevatelocal.co.uk/blog/fixing-seoquake-pagerank-check-06105097.

To summarize what the site recommended to fix SEOQuake on FF, here’s the following steps:

1. Go to SEOQuake Preferences window. Just right click the bar then SEOQuake->Preferences.
2. Then under PARAMETERS, you’ll see a Google pagerank option. Edit it and you will see the following line:

[URL_R]=http://toolbarqueries.google.com/search?client=navclient-auto&ch={gchecksum}&features=Rank&q=info:{url|encode}

3. Replace the search keyword from the line with tbr. So it should be like the following:

[URL_R]=http://toolbarqueries.google.com/tbr?client=navclient-auto&ch={gchecksum}&features=Rank&q=info:{url|encode}

4. Restart your browser and you’ll see your PR is back.

Firefox 4.0 was released today and I downloaded it immediately. I’ve been waiting for this update for I have read that it will be released this 22nd of March.

I stop from using the browser when I find Google Chrome as much simpler and faster compared to FF’s sluggish start-up and freezing while surfing. You’ll see from the image below that I am the 491,283rd person who downloaded the browser.

My first impression on the new browser is that it possess the same tab design as Chrome and IE9 with the orange Firefox menu at the top which what I like from Chrome and the new Internet Explorer 9. You can read on http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/ for the rest of the features of the new version of the browser. For now, I have a feeling that I’ll be using this version instead of Google Chrome specially that the latter is always hanging which I guess cause by the new Flash 10.2 (maybe but I’m not sure but Chrome started crashing from the time that I updated my Flash to the latest version).

You might want to change the default search engine (ASK.Com) to use by the address bar when you try to type a keyword to Google.com US. What you need to do is simply type about:config on the address bar. Look for the keyword.URL from the list of settings and replace its value with:

http://www.google.com/search?gl=US&hl=en&pws=0&q=

This will change the default keyword finder of the address to Google US.

Recently, an American comedian named Adam Carolla insulted Manny Pacquiao, the Filipinos and the Philippines with an interview with a podcast listener. He said some stuff that I don’t know if he knows that it is possible that it will be heard by millions of Filipinos. You can listen to the audio conversation of Adam Carolla’s rant on Manny Pacquiao HERE and you can leave your comments too there if you want to react.

Now, aside from this that raise the temperature of my blood like h3ll, virus and malware coders/programmers takes this opportunity to spread there bad intent through search query “Adam Carolla Pacquiao” on Google. Some of the sites can be blocked by Firefox / Chrome and marked by Google as “harmful sites” but some get away from their radar and my luck is I have a web filter enabled on my anti-virus program.

Guys so be careful with this query: Adam Carolla Pacquiao and make sure you are equipped with the latest anti-virus program that can check virus and bad scripts from the web and prevent it from infecting your PC.

On the latest video of Matt Cutts, he answered a question regarding dofollow commenting system and how it could harm the reputation of a site. He said that if a site contains spammy comments and linking to low quality sites, this makes the site’s reputation negatively affected. Since dofollow blogs (blogs with comment system with links that are dofollow – link power/juice transfers) usually lure a lot of spammers around the web.

However, he said that commenting to dofollow blogs does not have any negative effect to the commenter or the site that will link to the dofollow site. It is because, a site can’t control anyone who will link to it. This is really a good news for link builders and SEO practioners.

By the way, here’s the video of Matt Cutt’s containing the said discussion about the dofollow blogs:

Now, my advice is that you turn off your dofollow commenting system. WordPress usually use an “external nofollow” tag to every link in the comment section of the post so WP bloggers shouldn’t not worry. However, if you are not sure if your site uses nofollow or dofollow, just right click any link using firefox on your comments then check if you can see an “external nofollow.” If you can see it then there’s nothing to worry.

I discovered several sites again today which I will not mention on this post that is infected by the same virus that infected it last year but with slight modification on the malicious code. Some websites I know were also hacked and defaced. The problem is that sometimes, you can’t discover it until you find it out that Google already tagging/marking your site with a disturbing message “This site may harm your computer.” Which will immediately cause a drop on your traffic. The pain is it will take sometime before the “said mark” before Google lifts it.

This infection will really hurt your site in terms of traffic and sales lost which makes your SEO effort become useless. It is because, browsers today like Chrome and Firefox block sites with the said mark preventing users to open it even after you clean it.

This is the reason why you should avoid the infection to happen. It is as always I said, “prevention is always better than cure.” Here’s some of the things that you should consider to avoid this kind of situation (based on the suggestion of StopBadWare.org and my previous tips):

Protect your site

Ensure that any software you use (e.g., blogging software like WordPress, third party scripts, etc.) is kept up to date with the latest security fixes, either by you (if you installed the software) or by your hosting provider.

Remove any scripts, services, or other software that you are no longer using.

Change any default passwords that come with the software you are using.

Use appropriate file permissions on your web server.

Limit the access to the site. Remove old users that is not part of the team that should access the site.

Protect your password

Use a strong password and change it occasionally, especially if you have reason to think it has been compromised. A minimum of 12 character passwords composed of at least 2 symbols, 2 number and 2 upper case letters can create a hard to crack password.

Protect your computer

Use appropriate firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware or anti-badware. Usually infection starts on your PC. Even if you follow the previous preventive measures but you neglect your own PC, still your website can be infected.

Read StopBadWare.org’s tips on preventing badware infections for more information about this.

Are you still using the old versions of browser like the Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) or lower? Try updating your site now to the latest version of IE6 for better security and surfing experience. I am making this post because I found out yesterday when I check on my site in Iloilo in an internet cafe, that my site’s widget does not show properly in IE6 but looks better using the latest version of Firefox, Safari, Opera and Google Chrome. See the image below to see what my site looks like on the said version of IE.

Now, what are the advantages if you will use the latest version of browsers. Below are some of the the good things that might convince you to upgrade or update your browser.

Improved security. Latest versions usually patched or fixed vulnerabilities of the browser.

Enhanced plug-ins and scripting supports. More plug-ins or enhancements of websites are more supported by newer browsers compared to the old ones.

Optimized website loading and graphics rendering.

Lightweight in terms of memory and disk usage. This makes the browser to load faster.

Much improved caching capabilities.

Lately, I’ve been using Google Chrome a lot compared to the usual browser that I use which is the Mozilla Firefox. Its because I always suffer slow down and sudden freezing of my PC whenever I open Firefox. My time is so valuable that I just can’t wait for the Firefox to load. I don’t know why it always freezed. I think I have enough memory and disk to handle all the processing for the said program. The speed of loading of Chrome made me to use it frequently.

However, I am still using Firefox specially when I am in my “campaign.” I like the plug-ins that I have installed for my site that I always use for the SEO stuff which I think FF can only provide. Aside from that I like FF more than Chrome whenever I want to make a post specially if it involves embedding an image. Chrome just is not supporting resizing by dragging in WordPress.

Now, I check on my stats regarding my visitors preferences in viewing my sites and I thought a lot of them is using Chrome but I have discovered that most of my visitors use Internet Explorer then Mozilla Firefox while Chrome only falls on the 4th which is higher than Opera.

Here’s the graph of the breakdown of the browsers used by my visitors (this is based on one of my site):

I just recently received a notification from WordPress‘ dashboard regarding the availability of the newest update of the blogging platform, which is version 2.8. I immediately updated the site and in just one click through its automatic upgrade features and I am all done. What I did first was to check if the browser still crashes whenever I upload a file using WP’s flash uploader via Firefox. It did not crashed anymore! I’ve been using Chrome lately in upgrading my blogs because of this Firefox crash issues whenever I am making image uploads via flash uploader, now its gone so I’m back to Firefox again. I’ve checked my other blogs but there’s no notification yet so I am still waiting for the said upgrade notice from WP.

According to WordPress.org, the new released version have several scripting tweaks that speed-up the system. Syntax highlighting is now on the Code editor and they have made 790 fixes on the said update. If you want to see the difference, upgrade your WordPress now.

Here’s the video from WP regarding the new version:

What’s up with Windows 7 today? It is not yet officially released but a lot of its build can be found on torrent sites already. I myself have downloaded it, not from torrent but from Microsoft’s official build and installed it with my new MSI Notebook. I am using the Windows 7 Build 7000 and I think the latest build for this OS is Build 7048. Currently Microsoft stop the release of beta and you could get them from torrent sites only which honestly don’t know if it is legal or not but more likely its not. Now as far as I could try it on my notebook PC, I found the new OS faster than its previous version and it really fits well on my notebook PC. So far if it will be released, I am convinced to acquire it soon.

Now, I’ve read from Reuters today that one additional feature that they’ve put on their latest build is the abilitiy of users to disable embedded software like the Internet Explorer 8 and the other stuff that is usually bundled on Microsoft’s OS. This let users, if they will know it how, disable the use of the browser and download from the internet different browsers from the net such as Firefox, Google Chrome and others. This is maybe their move to get themselves away from the “antitrust” issues that they’ve been facing for a couple years already because of embedding essential softwares on their operating systems.

Here are some related articles that you could read about this latest update on Windows 7:

Just a couple of minutes ago, I’ve seen that almost all the keywords that I am searching in Google were all marked as harmful. I’ve seen all the search results were marked as “This site may harm your computer.” I thought I have a malware on my PC or another Google Hijacker penetrates my computer. I run several test and did not find anything malicious on my PC. But when I tried to look on it to Google’s Brower (Chrome), I did not find the message any more on the search so I thought maybe the problem is on some plug-ins onFirefox but its not the case. I search again using Firefox and the said message also disappear. Maybe they have fixed it.

I’m not the only one who saw this. Actually, at a forum where I am an active member, saw the same phenomena of this Google that marks all the sites as containing harmful code. Actually even Techcrunch.com blogged about this a while ago. I even left a message on Matt Cutt’s blog to ask about this because I am really worried.

Is this another Google experiment or change in their internal codes or Google was hijacked or infected by certain virus or worm? Well, I will just wait for the official press release of Google which I did not find yet from their blog. Maybe later, if they will explain it! By the way here’s the snapshot of the said phenomena, I have taken this from a forum post, I was not able to take the screen shots so I am using this one (thank you major hehehe !):

Update: Google official statement stated that the error on the flagging was caused by “Human Error.” Read their official statement here.
