The default format of Word 2007 whenever you save a new file, is a .DOCX or .DOCM (Office Open XML) format. The problem starts when you want to open the file , for example the file was sent to you as an attachment on email, and you only have a Word 2000/XP or 2003 . It can’t be opened by this old version.

There’s one thing you can do, you can either upgrade your office application or download a .DOCX converter which I think you don’t want to do yet.

Now, if you really want an immediate method of simply reading what the .DOCX document contains (for free), you can use Google Docs to open it and even save the whole document to the previous version (or even other format). Here’s how:

First, sign-in to your Google Docs account. Any of your Google accounts will work for this. If you still don’t have an account just sign-up. It will only take a minute to do that.

After that, click Upload from the top bar menu.

Browse and select the file that you want to view then click Upload button.

It will be opened immediately depending on the size of the file.

Now, if you want to save the file with a previous version file format, just click on the File Menu ->Download file as -> Word then download the file.

That’s it, you have already open the file without using the latest version of Office/Word. This is also applicable to Excel and Powerpoint files. Try it and let me know if it does really works for you by leaving a comment below.

I’ve read this news from Reuters regarding the revelation of Nokia in using Linux as its operating system for its new phone called N900 tablet. Its a touch phone with a slide-out keyboard and cost about $700+ (that’s 32.9K in pesos not including the tax, wow what a price). Usually, Nokia phones uses Symbian OS as its primary operating systems for its phone and its the first for them to use Linux, an open source operating system that is known to compete Microsoft’s Windows OS. However, they’ve said that they are not putting Symbian aside and even told media that it is still Nokia’s primary platform for their phones and will make it to improve more on the coming years.

Here’s the technical specification of the Nokia RX-51 aka Nokia N900 tablet :

Tablet With Side-sliding QWERTY keyboard

About the same size of Nokia E75

800×480-pixel Touch Screen

5.0 MP camera with F2.8 Lens

Using ARM’s Cortex-A8 processor (improving energy management of the phone)

32.0 GB Internal Memory + microSD slot for 32.0 GB External Memory

micro-USB port

TV Out

GPS

Now, if you will ask me if I will buy it just in case it will be available here in the Philippines, well I like to but I can’t – I will not. I want to buy it because I want to experience how this phone works but its too impractical for my part. Its the same feeling that I felt for iPhone. But if I will be given a chance (and the money) to buy it, I love too.

Windows Vista is the latest operating system from Microsoft. If you still got the XP version, the tips on this post are still applicable.

As we are always online and download several files from the net and install and uninstall it on our system, it sometimes make the system to have a slow performance because of the cluttering of the different old and new registry entries on your configuration files. This also makes your system to hang or freeze regularly.

If you want to solve this kind of problem on your PC, I am recommending to you a certain utility that is best for fixing these registry issues in your computers. I am referring to the Glary Utilities. Actually this was recommended by a friend and been trying the utility for several weeks now and find it really helpful in optimizing the performance of my Windows Vista and XP computers.

Some of the features of these utility are:

Disk Cleaner

Registry Cleaner

Shortcuts Fixer

Uninstall Manager

Memory Optimizer

Startup Manager

Registry Defrag

Track Eraser

File Undelete

File Encrypter and Decrypter

Disk Analysis

Duplicate Files Finder

Process Manager

Internet Explorer Assistant

Spyware Remover

What I like about this utility is its effectively fix errors on my PC and the simplicity of the interface that let me conveniently select the tasks that I want to do. It is not a resource hog as it only requires only 20MB of disk space and 32MB memory. Its an all-in-one PC fixer that is very easy to use.

You can get the Glary Utilities here, if you want to utilize and improve the performance of your computer.

Microsoft announced the new search engine that will replace the old Live Search. MSN/Live will be saying “Sayonara!” and Bing will say “Howdy!” instead. Today, when you try to go to Live.com, you will be forwarded to a new name called Bing.com. This new search engine or more described by Microsoft as Decision Engine is the new search service from them that uses a new approach in helping surfers to make better decisions through the use of the browser and surfing the web through the use of this new Bing.

According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer:

Bing is an important first step forward in our long-term effort to deliver innovations in search that enable people to find information quickly and use the information they’ve found to accomplish tasks and make smart decisions.

- excerpt from

Microsoft’s New Search at Bing.com Helps People Make Better Decisions

Now, what is with the name Bing and what’s the reason whey they rebrand the name Live and use the name Bing instead? Here’s the answer from Microsoft Live Search Team’s blog:

So why did we pick Bing as the new brand name? We needed a brand that was as fresh and new as our approach. It needed to be like the product — optimized for the Internet. A name that was memorable, short, easy to spell, and that would function well as a URL around the world. We like Bing because it sounds off in our heads when we think about that moment of discovery and decision making — when you resolve those important tasks. And frankly, the name needed to clearly communicate that this is something new, to invite you to come back, to re-introduce you to our new and improved service and encourage you to give it a try. – excerpt from “The Sound of found: Bing“

Yet this is another very big “Bing” opportunity for every search engine optimization/marketers (SEO/SEM) specialists and practitioners from around the world to work on making their project websites at the top of the Bing. This might be another great help for net surfers/users to find what they really need on the web through just binging.

Well, lets BING it on!

It is not yet officially released but a lot of its build can be found on torrent sites already. I myself have downloaded it, not from torrent but from Microsoft’s official build and installed it with my new MSI Notebook. I am using the Windows 7 Build 7000 and I think the latest build for this OS is Build 7048. Currently Microsoft stop the release of beta and you could get them from torrent sites only which honestly don’t know if it is legal or not but more likely its not. Now as far as I could try it on my notebook PC, I found the new OS faster than its previous version and it really fits well on my notebook PC. So far if it will be released, I am convinced to acquire it soon.

Now, I’ve read from Reuters today that one additional feature that they’ve put on their latest build is the abilitiy of users to disable embedded software like the Internet Explorer 8 and the other stuff that is usually bundled on Microsoft’s OS. This let users, if they will know it how, disable the use of the browser and download from the internet different browsers from the net such as Firefox, Google Chrome and others. This is maybe their move to get themselves away from the “antitrust” issues that they’ve been facing for a couple years already because of embedding essential softwares on their operating systems.

This virus, which is also known as Downup, Downandup and Kido, utilizes autorun.inf in USB sticks/flash drives to spread plus injecting itself through the network shares and to the registry of the Windows system via the vulnerability of the Windows operating system with no security patches prior to October 2008. Conficker was first detected last October 2008 and in just a small span of time, it already infected a lot of computers around the world. UK Ministry of Defense and various hospitals from Sheffield reported that they were infected by this wild Conficker worm.

Windows family of OS is the only target of this worm from Windows 2008, Vista to XP Home and Professional edition. According to Microsoft Support, to prevent such infection of this virus, operating system installed prior to October 2008 should be updated to the recent security patches provided by Microsoft. Recent maliscious software removal tool of Microsoft can detect and remove this infection. However, if the system is already infected, it prevents you to access security related website thus disallowing you to access Microsoft Support page and other anti-virus websites that can help you remove this infection. You need to remove it manually or via an anti-virus program from another computer. Microsoft Support at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 provided a step-by-step instruction on how to remove the infection manually.

Latest news about this worm said that the payload of Conficker is still about to come and just waiting for it to be activated. The high-tech culprit behind this is not yet traced but being tracked down by authorities. What the security experts scared about this infection now is that the possibility that someone might discover the activation of this worm and the uncertainties on how many computers can be accessed by hackers with full administration rights. Companies and organizations around the world that uses a unupdated operating systems are in danger of this security issue and should act on this immediately.

If you want to avoid/prevent this kind of infection to your PCs using Microsoft’s OS, make sure that you always update the system with the security patches from them. It will only take a minute to do that and it will be for the best of your system so you should provide time for it. If you neglect it, you might lost a lot of things. Be aware and be updated. Get a security patch always!

I decided to take a black MSI Wind Notebook. I really like its features and appearance except for its battery life. The 3-cell battery can only stay up to 2 hours of unplugged continuous use and I supposed to get a 6-cell version of the PC but it is not available during the time I buy the unit. Since I am so excited to put my fingers on the notebook so that is why I did not think twice of not taking the 3-cell battery PC despite the original plan was 6-cell. Maybe later I will just buy a 6-cell battery to replace 2-hour life battery.

Here’s the hardware spec and features of my new notebook:

Memory: 2 Gig

Hard disk: 160 GB

Processor: 1.6 GHz Intel Atom

Display: 10″

Batter: 3-cell Lion (2 hours life without electricity, I really don’t like charging the PC everytime but I can’t do anything about it yet.)

Operating System: FreeDOS when I buy it but later I installed Windows XP myself. Actually right now it utilizes two operating system. The first partition is Windows XP Professional and Windows 7 Beta for the other partition.

Color: Black

Built-in webcam, mic, WLAN, LAN, No Bluetooth, MMC reader

Now, I am only using MSI to check the attendance of my students and browse the net whenever there’s no available PC in school or when I’m in canteen taking a snack while surfing the net.

The affected units where models purchased last 2006 specifically the 30 Gig models. According from Microsoft, Zune’s problem where caused by the internal time driver of the device that can not handle leap year making the unit not to work properly when it steps the end of the year of 2008. They have already announced that this will be fixed as early as today (01/01/2009 7 a.m. PDT).

Now if you have your 30 Gig Zune unit and its freezes like a cold ice, here’s some steps that you can do to deal with it – a fix made available by Zune after the incident:

Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.

Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain
The primary goal of this workshop was to bring together scientists from diverse research disciplines and give them the opportunity to share their research and their experiences of how computing is shaping their work and thus providing new insights into facilitating scientific discovery. eScience tools which refers to the use of technology to facilitate scientific endeavors keeps on emerging and useful to the different field of sciences. In this conference, they have discussed several topics that in relation to parallel processing and cloud computing, two of the most changing scientific discoveries of the current time.

The conference showcases the importance of the new eScience tools for scientists to dissect and analyze data which are very important in science research. Here are some of the keynotes from the conference:

I’ve been using Windows XP for several years already and find it more reliable compared to other previous version of Windows. The problem with this version of Windows is some security issues that this OS are involved in. Actually a lot of viruses that I found are intended to attack all Windows XP’s vulnerability. And so, I tried installing Windows Vista but when I found some slight inconvenience in using it with some of my favorite software. That’s when I stop from exploring it and go back to Windows XP since a lot of my activities on PC involved those software. However, as the time goes by, it seems that is necessary for me to use its security features. That’s why by the next school year, I will recommend it to be used on all of our computers in school. I hope that we could afford the upgrade since to use Vista you need to make sure that your hardware should be at least to its minimum requirements (which is at least 1 GB of RAM and PIV processor).

Vista is considered to be the “very secured” operating system ever made by Microsoft and its stunning appearance makes it more attractive to users. Now despite some users were not able to use Vista yet, Windows 7 – the latest version of Windows which is currently underdevelopment, is about on its way of release by next year. To give us an overview about this new operating system from Microsoft, here’s the review of Computer World about the pre-beta release of Windows 7:

Overall, Windows 7 is a more functional, more efficiently designed operating system than Windows Vista, with far more attention paid to the user experience. From revamped a User Account Control (UAC) feature to better home networking, improved search and nice interface tweaks, the entire operating system has gotten an overall polishing. Even Windows Backup, one of the worst applications ever shipped with an operating system, has been turned into something useful.Read the rest of the review of Computer World here.

Now, what I am wishing on this new version of Windows is when it comes out, I hope that it can still run on my current hardware so that I will not buy a new CPU for it to work with me. How about you, are you excited with this new operating system from Microsoft?
