3. If you don’t know how to configure CNAME then you can simply use the subdomain provided by SpeedyMirror. In my case, I use bleuken.speedymirror.com. If you want to configure a custom domain for your new CDN, you need to go to your CPANEL and create a CNAME entry from the Simple DNS Editor under the Domains category of your control panel. Just click it and configure it as shown below.

4. The next thing you need to do is to configure your WordPress blog to use the CDN via the W3 Total Cache CDN configuration. Just enable CDN from the settings and choose MIRROR for the type of CDN. Then go to CDN and add your SpeedMirror URL as shown below.

5. Last and not the least, you might want to enable the HOTLINK PROTECTION of your CDN so that other websites/blogs/scrapers out there will not spend your own bandwidth or traffic. If you can’t afford to get CDN from MaxCDN or Amazon S3/Cloudfront then you might want to try this free content delivery network to make your website to load faster and much secured from possible DOS (denial of services) attacks. The said CDN is called CloudFlare which features free caching your pages and delivering it fast to your users from different part of the world. One feature that I like about the CDN is it accelarates the site, block threats and limit abusive bots and crawlers from wasting the bandwidth and server resources of my site. Another feature that I love is the “Always Online” option which makes your website still available despite server time out or disconnection.

Its easy to implement on your website. It takes almost four steps and less than several minutes to use it on your site. What you need is you should have an access on configuring the NAMESERVERS of your domain name from your DOMAIN REGISTRAR (like Godaddy.com, Name.com).

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Sign-up an account on CloudFlare.com

2. Add your website on the Dashboard then click Add this Website. The system will read the configuration of your site for almost 50 seconds then click Continue to Step 2.

3. On the next step, you’ll see the DNS records of your system. You can add necessary CNAME and A records depending on the configuration of your system. Usually you will not change this specially if you have no sub-domains but if you have check it and make sure your sub-domains are included on the records. After you click continue on the next step, you’ll be shown with the configuration to recheck the new configuration.

4. After the 1st to 3rd step, you will receive a new nameserver from CloudFlare that you need to replace on your existing nameserver via your domain registrar as per shown below.

That’s it, you’re done. Your website is now accelerated and at the same time secured. One last thing that I think you might want to do is to configure the BASIC SECURITY LEVEL of your site via CloudFlare Settings. Mine, I change it to LOW settings so that the site will not prompt that much for users with unsecured PCs. You might want to install CloudFlare’s plug-in if your site is using WordPress.

How to Implement CDN on Your WordPress Site/Blog?

One of the changes made by Google in their ranking algorithm is adding the page speed of a website on their signals for considering websites to position well in the SERPs. There are a lot of stuff you can do with your WordPress site or blog to decrease its response time (less response time, the faster the website). I usually use plug-ins like Super Cache and Hypercache to make my sites to load much faster.

However, I shift to W3 Total Cache because its a complete package of caching system for WP blog and that includes the implementation of Content Development Network (CDN). Now, if you want to implement CDN to your site, you can follow the following steps:

Sign-up for an account on MAXCDN. It is a CDN provider which will cost you about $39.95 for 1TB or 1,000 gigabyte of bandwidth.
Then, install a W3 Total Cache. Make sure to disable and uninstall other caching system before doing this.
Other the CDN option of W3 Total Cache, select the Mirror option and enable the CDN.
Go to your MAXCDN account and create a zone. The recommended type of zone that you should create is a Pull Zone. A Pull Zone automatically fetch files from your website and create a mirror of it.
Then, you will be asked by MAXCDN to create a CNAME entry on your site. This is done on the CPANEL of your website under Simple DNS Editor. Get the “entry” from MAXCDN and create your own custom CDN domain.
Fill-up the CDN domain from the option of W3 Total Cache under CDN. Test if it works and if it does, you’re done.

After you implement this, you’ll see the improvement of the speed of your site and eventually an increase in the ranking / position of your website on search engine result pages (SERPs).

Beginning of A New Day For Me

Nah! I am not blogging about the newest update on WordPress turning to 3.0 or anything about the enhancements I made for my websites in a dedicated server to make it much faster than it does. I will try to discuss it later. For now, I want to share about how have a new day this opening of classes this June. I asked my boss (Department Head of CS) to make my employment status in school as part time from full-time.

Yeah, you read it right! I asked her to make me a part-time teacher of the school. It sounded like that I asked her to demote me . Why? It simply because I decided to focus more on my internet ventures and having an “overloaded passionate” (a little exaggeration with the phrase) teaching will just make me lost my focus on a much “greener pasture.”

But why just quit all the way and have a full-time focus on the said business? Well, I just still love teaching and really like to share a lot of stuff to new breed of hot blooded internet surfers aka young students and make them enlighten to the world of great beginning in making money online adventures. Aside from that, teaching makes me to learn new things and socialize to a lot of people offline. It is like a regular exercise routine for my brain cells and mouth muscles.

The advantages of my decision on focusing on my “work at home” business are – one, it let me spent more time with my family. Next it let me earn more than I should (compared to teaching and even to working abroad as an OFW) and finally it made me to take “rest” more than ever.

What I have now is just the beginning of a new day and I am very hopeful that my decisions would be according to what God have plan for me. I believe that everything that I have now – a great family, teaching career and a nice “work at home” business are all provided by the great God and I thank Him for that.

He is just correct to what he have said to me, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you!” It happened!

WordPress Plug-in for Faster Website

It is important that your WP sites are responding well whenever your visitor visits. Not only because, Google officially announced that they’ll include site speed and performance as part of the ranking signals or factor for ranking your website on their SERP but also it is because that this will improve the user experience of your visitors. If they find it to be very easy and fast access then there’s a high chance that they will go back to your site. Thus developing a regular visitor.

Now, there are a lot of WordPress plug-ins today that can be used to increase the speed performance of your website but I shift to one plug-in that contains optimization of the site. From compressing your site through GZip to managing the CDN (content delivery network) for your website. I am referring to the W3 Total Cache plug-in. Back then, I use either Super Cache or Hyper Cache as for my caching plug-ins but these two plug-in doesn’t have any option for integrating CDN to my site.

CDN or content delivery network is used for faster delivery of contents for websites. Files are stored in different networks and rendered fast from the nearest server to the location of the requesting surfer.

Now regarding the plug-in, it contains all necessary options to improve your WordPress site and been testing it for weeks. As of today, the plug-in did very well to my sites and right now updating the remaining of my sites to use it.

Don’t Block Duplicate Contents on Your Site

Google through Matt Cutts said that they are not recommending site owners or webmasters to block duplicate contents that exist on their sites. He is referring to blocking the said dupe content through the use of DISALLOW option of ROBOTS.TXT and the NOFOLLOW, NOINDEX meta tag. Instead Matt said that all the contents should be allowed to be crawled by the GoogleBot (Google’s spider) and let their system determine on which version of page should be indexed or included on their database and result pages.

For me, instead of just letting GoogleBot do the decision making for what page version to be shown on SERPs (search engine result pages), I will just use canonical tags which I think can be programatically generated and embed on pages. In this way, you’ll have the control on which of the page will be the landing page that you want to be found by surfers and searchers on the web.

If you are using the latest version of WordPress for your site, it generates the canonical link / tag so you don’t have any problem with it already but you just need to do some minor tweaks and install some SEO plug-ins.

Some of the people I know create themes for WordPress and Blogger platforms to link a lot of links to their promoted site. Usually this makes their website promoted by other websites online that features great WP and blogger themes. Thus, building organic links from their “masterpiece.” Aside from that the themes that they are creating contains a link back to the author’s site which is usually on the footer of the blog theme.

Dofollow Comment System May Harm Your Site

On the latest video of Matt Cutts, he answered a question regarding dofollow commenting system and how it could harm the reputation of a site. He said that if a site contains spammy comments and linking to low quality sites, this makes the site’s reputation negatively affected. Since dofollow blogs (blogs with comment system with links that are dofollow – link power/juice transfers) usually lure a lot of spammers around the web.

However, he said that commenting to dofollow blogs does not have any negative effect to the commenter or the site that will link to the dofollow site. It is because, a site can’t control anyone who will link to it. This is really a good news for link builders and SEO practioners.

Now, my advice is that you turn off your dofollow commenting system. WordPress usually use an “external nofollow” tag to every link in the comment section of the post so WP bloggers shouldn’t not worry. However, if you are not sure if your site uses nofollow or dofollow, just right click any link using firefox on your comments then check if you can see an “external nofollow.” If you can see it then there’s nothing to worry.
