You might be wondering why your backlinks suddenly drop after you check it using backlink checker tools like those simple tool provided by Yahoo Site Explorer (which you can use by typing link:http://yoururl.com). This is not a cause of any penalty nor banning thing but its more on the other website. Here are some of the possibilities that might be the cause of decrease in backlinks:

Google removes the backlink value when the source site doesn’t exist. This is what the following video of Matt Cutt’s explained about Google’s treatment of Geocities, AOL member pages and other site that vanished in the WWW.

If the source of your backlinks is from blog commenting, then the owner might have implemented something on its comment section and / or remove old comments. The owner might have implemented NOFOLLOW from previous DOFOLLOW settings.

Search Engines change in algorithm sometimes includes a clean-up of links giving no value to some links nor discarding it from their index.

Remember, there’s no permanent in this world and backlinks are not excluded from this saying.

Google implemented it on search results but it is still on the early stage so there’s no fixed method or practice that is stated by Matts on the video. However, he emphasized that a “delimited links that accurately reflects the site’s hierarchy” might give a site a better chance to have breadcrumbs on search results.

Here’s an interesting posts by Search Engine Land where it stated that Google are planning to introduce a new ranking factor and that is the loading speed. This mean that will consider fast loading websites to rank well on their search result pages. Matt Cutts said that this ranking factor might be implemented or take into consideration by the giant search engine by 2010.

Previously, he announced that the newest ranking algorithm codenamed “Caffeine” will be live on one of their data centers after the holidays. This mean by January 2010 and onwards they will start to push the changes to all of their data centers and expect for Caffeine to be on browsers worldwide. Fast search results rendering is expected from this change.

The following video shows the interview of Mike McDonald (WebProNews) with Matt Cutts mentioning about this topic:

That is right guys, Google announces the end of the sandbox to move to the release of the next search engine algorithm of the biggest search engine ever existed on the world wide web. According to Matt Cutts (from his blog) that they will move from the developer preview to going live using one data center.

Here is what he said from his blog:

I know that webmasters can get anxious around this time of year, so I wanted to reassure site owners that the full Caffeine roll out will happen after the holidays. Caffeine will go live at one data center so that we can continue to collect data and improve the technology, but I don’t expect Caffeine to go live at additional data centers until after the holidays are over. Most searchers wouldn’t immediately notice any changes with Caffeine, but going slowly not only gives us time to collect feedback and improve, but will also minimize the stress on webmasters during the holidays.
- Matt Cutts’ blog

Search engine optimizers and specialists get ready for this and be ready for the change on indexing structure and ranking of the sites.

Today, Google Webmaster Help releases new videos discussing the two meta attributes that lets you prevent the “link juice” from your site to flow to other unknown external sites and preventing your website to be crawled and listed on Google’s result pages.

The first video discusses the reason why an uncrawled URLs are still on the search result pages of the said search engines despite the webmaster prevented the spider crawling thru robots.txt. Solution provided by Matt Cutts was using the NOINDEX attribute for the meta robots tag on your header so that the pages on the index will be dropped from their list. Here’s the video:

This next video discusses the nofollow attribute to control or deal with comment spamming. It is explained by him again how the owner of sites makes their own solution in avoiding this kind of spamming. However, there’s no detailed information on the video that is saying how Google deals with comment spammers. Watch this video:

I watched this video from Google Webmaster Help channel in Youtube where Matt Cutts answered a question regarding the results in Google.co.uk where non-.co.uk sites are currently ranking well on the SERPs (search engine result pages). Right before the changes on the algorithm of Google, website that utilizes ccTLD (country code top-level domains) on their website are more visible on a specific country. Now, its different. Google look more on the relevance of the content to the country. It doesn’t immediately make any geo specific sites to rank higher than generic TLDs (.com, .org or .net). It means that, if you’re targeting topics to rank well on a specific country, make sure that the contents and backlinks are related to your target. If you want to rank in the Google Philippines data center, your content (even your title doesn’t contain the name of the country) should be very relevant to the said geo-location.

Here’s the video that I am talking about featuring Matt Cutts of Google:

The next generation of Google infrastructure was announced in Google Webmaster’s blog and Matt Cutt’s blog but I wasn’t able to blog about it. Now, I am informing those who were not yet aware of these “new thing” on Google. Nah, they will not change the colors or appearance of their UI. They are just not like that. They are more focus on how they can deliver much faster and more relevant results rather than an overall makeover of their appearance. This is the reason why this giant search engine became very successful today.

The Caffeine is another cool project of Google to enhance more the current speed and relevancy of the results that they provide to Google users. This might be released sooner so if you want to have a preview of it and give feedback, go to www2.sandbox.google.com and feel the speed plus the result.

Let us hear directly from Matt Cutts (Google Heat of Web Spam/Software Engineer) what he said about this new project and find out the reason why he got a hair cut.

On the video, Matt Cutts was interviewed by Mike Douglas of WebPronews. “They have something in common. I might copy the same hair cut later. But I think my wife will not allow it.“

Matt Cutts is the current head of the web spam team of Google and the author of the first version of SafeSearch which is Google’s “family filter.” I usually read his blog to look for new things about the search engine and I usually find answers about things that I use for my SEO stuff. Now, I found out that we can chat with him this coming October 22, 9AM PDT (its October 23, 12 A.M. in the Philippines – and I will prepare my coffee cup for this). Aside from him other known Google personalities will be chatting on this once in a lifetime event. Matt Cutts will be chatting from Mountain View then John Mueller from Zurich and Kaspar Szymanski in Dublin.

This will be a great opportunity for us to ask several questions about some beliefs and about how the search engines treat our websites. I will ask him if I will be given opportunity to raise some questions regarding search engine optimization because I want to clear something to him regarding how they deal the spamming on Google and the so-called “Black Hat SEO”. If you want to join the said chat event with this people, just visit the Official Google Webmaster Central site to register.
