How to Open MS Word 2007 File (.DOCX) without Office 2007

With the introduction of the newest document format of Microsoft Word on its new version starting from Word 2007 (& the coming soon 2010 version), problems occur for those who received this format specially those who still used the old version of the application. The default format of Word 2007 whenever you save a new file, is a .DOCX or .DOCM (Office Open XML) format. The problem starts when you want to open the file , for example the file was sent to you as an attachment on email, and you only have a Word 2000/XP or 2003 . It can’t be opened by this old version.

There’s one thing you can do, you can either upgrade your office application or download a .DOCX converter which I think you don’t want to do yet.

Now, if you really want an immediate method of simply reading what the .DOCX document contains (for free), you can use Google Docs to open it and even save the whole document to the previous version (or even other format). Here’s how:

First, sign-in to your Google Docs account. Any of your Google accounts will work for this. If you still don’t have an account just sign-up. It will only take a minute to do that.
After that, click Upload from the top bar menu.
Browse and select the file that you want to view then click Upload button.
It will be opened immediately depending on the size of the file.
Now, if you want to save the file with a previous version file format, just click on the File Menu ->Download file as -> Word then download the file.

That’s it, you have already open the file without using the latest version of Office/Word. This is also applicable to Excel and Powerpoint files. Try it and let me know if it does really works for you by leaving a comment below.

Share Your Medical Records Online

Google announced its new free service to the online community. Now they are providing a free way for people to easily upload their medical records online through their new service called Google Health. This let you easily store your dusting and piling health documents to their system. You just simply scan and upload it and your records will be on place and you can easily manage it. What is nice with this system is that you can share it with your doctors or caregivers for future use.

Here are the following features of the said Google health related service:

You can build online health profiles.
Import medical records from hospitals and pharmacies.
Share your health records.
Explore online health services.

Now, if you are worry about the confidentiality of your medical conditions or records, the system allows you to select which information that can be seen and whom to share it. Currently its on Beta phase and I think they are finalizing everything before Google fully promote it and remove the Beta tag.

I already signed up and will try to store my own health records. For preparation just in case, my wife lost my “medical history” on papers. How about you, will you dare to share your own records online?

Adsense Ready & SEO Friendly Blogger Template / Blogspot Theme

Today, I decided to build a new template / theme for blogs on Blogger.com. What this Blogger template or theme special is for being ready of showing Google Adsense on every post and also for being a SEO friendly template for Blogger.com. It is a simple 3-Column black theme template. To see a sample blog that uses this theme, just click on the snapshot below.

Now, here’s how to install this free simple adsense-ready and SEO-friendly theme:

1. Download the theme on this location: Simple Adsense Ready Template. This file is a ZIP file. You should extract its content before you can use it.

2. Go to your Blogger account and sign-in.

3. At your Dashboard, click on the Lay-out tab and then click Edit HTML

4. You can see a portion on the page where you can upload a file. Upload the file extracted from the Zip file, specifically the black-adsense-ready.xml

5. To put your Google Adsense publisher code, (the code that is something like pub-12346789012345), just click on the Expense Widget Templates checkbox from the Edit HTML tab then look for the portion with pub- then replace it with your own publisher code.

6. Save all of your changes then you can start blogging. If you want to customize the sidebar, just click on the Page Elements tab and add all the gadgets that you want.

New Windows Live Released

I’ve been a Hotmail user since 1998 and this was actually my first web-based email account when I first got online. Yesterday, I just received an email from Hotmail/Live about the new version of Windows Live. This new Live allows you to check any email accounts including your Hotmail accounts. Aside from Windows Live that allows you to check all of your email accounts in one program, the new package includes other web tools that you can use for updating your blogs, for photo and video sharing and other things. Here are other tools used included on the Live installation:

Live Messenger/Call – This allows you to chat online via text and voice. It also allows you to share your video and photo. Through you can also set-up a 20 people chat session.
Live Mail – This is the system that allows you to check all your email accounts without the browser. I usually use Mozilla Thunderbird to check my emails but maybe I will use this one instead from now on, specially for my Hotmail account.
Live Writer – A tool that works with most popular blogging services, including your Windows Live space. Use Writer to create and format blog posts with rich content, such as maps, tables, hyperlinks, tags, and categories.
Live Family Safety – lets you choose the web content your children see, choose who they talk to online, and get reports of their online activity.

I am still checking on the new features of the tools mentioned and I can’t thoroughly describe each feature yet. I will just update this post if I will encounter any issues that is worth to mention but right now I am happy with Windows Live because at least I could easily check all my email from Gmail, Hotmail and Bleuken.com. Later, I will make a post on how to configure Windows Live to sync all your emails from different email providers to the current program.

The advantage of having a license operating system from Microsoft is that you can avail of the free downloadable stuff from their website. I have here a list of some those free tools and other free stuff you can download and install on your PCs.

Windows Defender. A free program that helps you protect your computer against spyware, pop-ups and other security threats caused by this malicious programs and other unwanted software.
Malicious Software Removal Tool. A tool that checks your computer for infection of malicious software (such as the Blaster, Sasser and MyDoom) and remove the infection found.
Microsoft Photo Story 3.
A free photo tool that allows you to create slideshows using your digital photos. In single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures, add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. You can also personalize them with titles and captions. Small file sizes make it easy to send your photo stories in an e-mail or even post it on Youtube. Video slideshows created can be watched on TV, computer, or a Windows Mobile
