A Historic Comeback: Manny Pacquiao Returns at 46

It’s official—Pacquiao is back.

At 46 years old, the Filipino boxing icon announced his comeback via X (formerly Twitter), igniting excitement across the boxing world. This will mark Pacquiao’s first professional bout in nearly four years, his last being a close decision loss to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021. Since then, he’s dabbled in exhibition fights and even ran for office in the Philippines, but the hunger for championship gold clearly never faded.

“I’m back. On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Let’s make history!“ – Manny Pacquiao on X

Pacquiao isn’t just returning to fight—he’s returning to make history. Still the only boxer to win titles in eight different weight divisions, this comeback isn’t just personal—it’s legacy-defining.

The Reigning Champion: Mario Barrios’ Moment to Shine

Facing the legend will be 29-year-old Mario “El Azteca” Barrios, the current WBC welterweight titleholder. Barrios captured the interim title in May 2024 by defeating Fabian Maidana and was promoted to full champion after Terence Crawford vacated the belt.

Barrios last fought in a gritty, high-stakes draw against Abel Ramos on the undercard of the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson spectacle. Though still carving his place among the division’s elite, Barrios has already stood toe-to-toe with top-tier names like Gervonta Davis.

Now, with the world watching, Barrios faces his biggest test yet: defending his belt against a Hall of Fame-bound opponent.

Why This Fight Matters

The Pacquiao vs Barrios fight is more than just another championship bout. It’s a clash of eras. A battle between youthful hunger and timeless greatness. And for boxing fans, it’s a reminder that magic moments in the ring still exist.

Pacquiao vs Barrios Fight Prediction

This is a tough fight to call due to Pacquiao’s extended layoff and advanced age. However, one cannot underestimate the heart and competitive spirit of Manny Pacquiao. He wouldn’t return if he didn’t believe he could win.

Barrios is a legitimate champion, strong and resilient. He will likely try to use his physicality and consistent output to break Pacquiao down. The key factor will be how much Pacquiao has left in the tank. If Pacquiao can maintain his speed and deliver his signature flurries for a significant portion of the fight, he has the boxing IQ and power to trouble Barrios. However, the four-year absence is a significant hurdle.

Given Barrios’s recent activity and the natural decline that comes with age, especially after a long layoff, Mario Barrios is likely to retain his WBC Welterweight Championship via a unanimous decision. Pacquiao will undoubtedly have his moments, showcasing flashes of his old brilliance, but Barrios’s youth, sustained pressure, and ability to endure will likely see him through to a hard-fought victory. The fight is expected to be competitive and thrilling, but Barrios’s fresher legs and championship-level form should give him the edge.

I think Pacquiao should just enjoy his retirement and stop from fighting! This is not good to his well being and really dangerous. Money is nothing if he ends up dead after this fight! Anyway, I love to see him fight again but I think he is too old for this!
