BYD’s best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV in the Philippines just got a government filing that hints at a significant update. The Department of Energy’s recognized EV database now lists two 2027 Sealion 6 DM-i variants — a Dynamic and a Premium — signaling that the crossover is about to expand beyond its current single-variant lineup.

The DOE listing, first spotted by AutoIndustriya and Top Gear Philippines in July 2026, follows the same pre-launch pattern we’ve seen with the Kia EV3, Jaecoo J8 PHEV, and BMW iX3 50 xDrive. No official launch date or pricing has been announced by BYD Cars Philippines yet, but the filing gives us a clear picture of what’s coming.

What the DOE Listing Reveals

Both the 2027 Sealion 6 DM-i Dynamic and Premium retain BYD’s Super DM-i powertrain: a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine serving as a generator, paired with a single front-mounted electric motor and an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery. The system sends power to the front wheels only.

Combined output is rated at 217 PS and 300 Nm of torque — slightly less torque than the current model’s 325 Nm, though the DOE figure may reflect a different measurement standard. The all-electric range holds at 100 km (NEDC), while combined range with a full 60-liter tank climbs to 1,200 km — 100 km more than the current model’s 1,100 km.

Here’s where it gets interesting: the two variants are not just trim levels. They represent a genuine split in the lineup that gives buyers a real choice between affordability and features.

Dynamic vs Premium: The Key Differences

The Dynamic is the entry-level variant. It strips out the DiPilot ADAS suite entirely — no adaptive cruise control, no lane-keeping assist, no autonomous emergency braking. You get conventional cruise control instead. It also loses the power tailgate, ambient interior lighting, rain-sensing wipers, powered lumbar support for the driver’s seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and wireless charging pads. The infotainment screen shrinks from the current model’s 15.6-inch rotating unit to a fixed 12.8-inch display, and the speaker count drops from 10 to 6. No front parking sensors either.

Charging on the Dynamic is limited to 6.6 kW Type 2 AC, which takes the battery from 15% to 100% in about 2.8 hours. That’s fine for overnight home charging but means no DC fast charging capability — you can’t top up at a public DC station.

The Premium adds back everything the Dynamic loses, and crucially, introduces DC fast charging via CCS2 at up to 18 kW. That’s not blisteringly fast by 800V standards, but it means a 30-80% top-up takes just 30 minutes at a compatible DC station — a first for the Sealion 6 nameplate. The Premium also gets the full DiPilot ADAS suite, the 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, 10-speaker Infinity Audio system, power tailgate, ventilated front seats, and wireless charging.

Pricing: What to Expect

The current Sealion 6 DM-i Advanced retails at P1,598,000 — up P50,000 from its P1,548,000 launch price in May 2024. The new Dynamic variant is expected to undercut that figure, potentially dropping below P1.5 million given its reduced feature set. The Premium, with its added DC charging and ADAS, should land closer to P1.6-1.7 million.

At current exchange rates (62.92 PHP/USD, 95.25 INR/USD), here’s how the current model’s price converts:

Variant PHP USD INR
Current Advanced P1,598,000 ~$25,400 ~Rs 24.2 lakh
2027 Dynamic (est.) ~P1,450,000 ~$23,000 ~Rs 22.0 lakh
2027 Premium (est.) ~P1,650,000 ~$26,200 ~Rs 25.0 lakh

These are estimates — BYD Philippines has not announced pricing for either variant. The Dynamic’s sub-P1.5M positioning would make it one of the most accessible PHEV crossovers under a million and a half, slotting below the BYD Ti 7 and its 483 hp, which starts at P2.098 million.

Philippine Driving Conditions: How It Fits

City Driving

The Sealion 6’s 100 km electric range is more than enough for a typical EDSA commute. Most Metro Manila drivers cover 30-50 km daily, meaning you could go several days between charges. The instant torque from the electric motor makes stop-and-go traffic less tiresome, and the 19-inch wheels (235/50 R19) provide a comfortable ride over EDSA’s patched asphalt. The 173 mm ground clearance is adequate for most urban road conditions, though speed bumps in subdivisions with aggressive profiles warrant caution.

Long-Distance Travel

The 1,200 km combined range is the real selling point for provincial trips. Manila to Baguio is roughly 250 km — the Sealion 6 could theoretically make it on a single tank with range to spare. The addition of 18 kW DC charging on the Premium variant changes the equation: even if you deplete the battery on a long drive, a 30-minute stop at a CCS2 DC station gets you back to 80%. For drivers without home charging, the Dynamic’s AC-only limitation is a real inconvenience — you’d need access to a 6.6 kW wallbox or public AC charger overnight.

Flooded Situations

The 173 mm ground clearance is respectable for a crossover but not immune to flooding. In severe monsoon conditions — think Marikina, Taguig, or Cavite during heavy rains — that clearance can be insufficient. The LFP battery pack is sealed and carries an IP rating (typically IP67 for BYD Blade batteries), but wading through deep floodwater remains risky for any vehicle. The EV powertrain does eliminate the risk of hydrolock, which is a genuine advantage over internal combustion engines in flooded streets.

High Temperature

Metro Manila’s 36-38°C heat is hard on batteries, but LFP chemistry is inherently more thermally stable than NMC alternatives. BYD’s Blade Battery uses a liquid cooling system that maintains optimal temperature even under heavy AC load. Expect some range reduction in extreme heat — 10-15% is typical — but the Sealion 6’s 100 km EV range has enough buffer to absorb that hit without causing range anxiety.

How It Stacks Up

The Sealion 6 occupies a unique space in the Philippine PHEV market. At P1,598,000 for the current Advanced, it undercuts the BYD Sealion 7 (P2.849 million, 523 hp full EV) while offering far more range. The VinFast VF 8 (231 hp, 60.13 kWh, 500 km NEDC) is a full EV with less range but no fuel backup. The Nissan Navara Pro PHEV (408 hp, launching November 6) targets a different body style entirely — pickup versus crossover.

The 2027 Dynamic’s estimated sub-P1.5M price would make it one of the most compelling PHEV values in the country — if BYD follows through on the positioning implied by the DOE filing’s feature split.

The Bottom Line

BYD’s Sealion 6 DM-i has been a quiet success story in the Philippine market, offering near-1,100 km of combined range in a practical crossover package. The 2027 update addresses its two biggest limitations: the single-variant monopoly and the lack of DC fast charging. The Dynamic opens the door to budget-conscious PHEV buyers who don’t need ADAS; the Premium rewards those who want the full tech suite and charging flexibility.

No launch date has been confirmed, but given that the DOE filing appeared in July and BYD’s track record in the Philippines — 81 dealerships, 26,122 units sold in 2025, fastest-growing brand — a Q4 2026 or Q1 2027 announcement seems likely. If you’re in the market for a PHEV crossover and can wait a few months, the 2027 Sealion 6 DM-i is worth watching. The Dynamic’s estimated price point could make it the value pick of the segment.
