Page Rank (PR) Change on Toolbar Today

Google, Webmasters and SEO

As mentioned in SearchEngineLand.com, PageRank was dropped by Google Webmaster tools the other week and this emphasizes the message of the giant search engines that webmasters and SEO specialists should not focus so much on PageRank that is shown on their toolbar. However, today, despite this indication of Google on not emphasizing PRs on site, they made a global pagerank update on their toolbar. I checked on my several sites and some of them increases or gain their PR. However this blog still retain its PR3 not moving a one notch.

According to the article that I have read relevant to this update, this send a mixed message for webmasters and SEOs (Google of dropping the PR then updating it for some reasons). A lot of people thought that it will eventually lost from the famous Google toolbar but with the push on new PR data this thought will be changed.

Another PR Update This Month

I’ve just discovered recently that another PageRank (PR) update was made. That’s right! My new websites and blogs gain some PR after several updates. The last time that there is an update as I remember was this May, just the other month. It seems that this is one of the changes that Google made on this PR changes. It seems that they can make any PR update any time they want or maybe they make the calculations of PR much easier, allowing newly built websites to gain an appropriate PR basing on a certain merit.

Well, this is good news for me and good news for those who are starting to have their websites. PageRank, even for others are not important, is still a great number or green bar to glance at whenever you open a certain website. It is like a status symbol for every website today that Google developed and dream by website owners around the world.

Canonical Link Element: Duplicate Contents Solution?

Duplicate contents, one of the issue of a website that usually committed by designers, developers and owners. This usually causes some sites not to be indexed properly by the leading search engines. This is sometimes cause of improper use of www and non-www version of the site. This kind of duplication is usually called as a canonical issue and can be solved easily using permanent 301 redirect but the problem with this solution is some site owners don’t have enough authority to change this kind of .htaccess configuration. In Google webmasters tool, this www and non-www issue is usually solved by simple configuration on this Google tool. Now for other search engines, they don’t have any specific solution for this but instead they deal it through their own internal algo.

Not until the other month, search engines – Google, Yahoo and Live/MSN announced that they can recognize the canonical link element to be embeded on pages with duplication issues. This is a small code that let you redirect a page in a domain to another page on the same domain without using the 301 redirect. Now, how can you implement it with your site. Well you can do it manually or if you are using a CMS like WordPress there’s already a plug-in for that and I think WordPress will do this stuff automatically on their next update/version.

If you want to apply it to your site manually, this is what you need to do. For example, you want to redirect http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html to http://www.yourdomain.com/ then you should add the following code to your header tag in index.html:

It is so easy right? But you should do this correctly to make it effective. You should identify pages of the site to apply this changes and embed the code to the pages properly. I also recommend that you watch this video of Matt Cutts on canonical link element so that you will have a broader understanding about this matter. New SEO Competition for 2009

Today a new search engine optimization contest was announced. It will start on March 1, 2009 at 12 noon and you can read the details on http://claremontdesign.com/blog/. It is open to all bloggers, search engine optimizers, specialists and any other levels of search engine optimization expertise. This competition will surely test the skills of this SEO masters. I recommend that you join this competition, noob or an expert, this will give you an opportunity to learn, apply your theories and the big possibility to earn while enjoying the rush of blood brought by competitive unpredictable results in Google. The total prize budget for this competition is about $500.00 or more than Php20,000 in cash at stake.

Actually their is an existing competition currently running today in our province called “Hectic Capiznon Bloggers 2009” (read my previous post about this) where I am one of the supporter and participant but this event that I am introducing today will not conflict this competition because they have different target audiences and participants. Do you know why I always give time to participate small to big time SEO competition despite the win is not predictable and the waste of time is inevitable, like the Busby SEO Test and the others? It is because I’ve seen some real benefits that it can give to your website. Specially if the key phrase or key word that is targetted by the contestants are related to the theme of the site. Actually even it is not relevant at all, there’s a benefit that a website can gain. One is it increases the backlinks of the site specially if the method use to rank the site is a white hat method. Another thing that I like about this kind of competition is that the excitement it brings. You will feel the rush of blood specially if you see that your site is ranking well for the keyword.
